At my last job, I became very close with a coworker who ended up becoming my adopted grandmother. Sure, we’re different colors and not really related, but she and I have a strong connection. She’s totally badass – a 75-year-old who helps her daughter raise five young children, she works full-time, is very into God but also can call someone a “shovel-ass motherfucker.” I aspire to have her spirit when I’m her age. Shit, I’d like to have it now.
So I’m beyond happy for her because she and her family are going to receive a Habitat for Humanity house. The build is scheduled to happen in January, and volunteers are needed. I will be there for sure, and I’m going to try to get at least one of the carpenters in my family to participate. I hope one or more of you might be interested in helping, too. I volunteered for Habitat about ten years ago. I did a “women’s build,” and it was a lot of fun. Very satisfying volunteer experience. Anyway, as I get more details, I’ll pass them on. This woman is truly one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met.
And she drinks beer, too.
